A nice surprise for the "Chemins des Ducs" project.

Better knowledge and understanding of the challenges facing Great Horned Owl populations in the Hauts-de-France region.

As part of the "Chemins des Ducs" project piloted by our partners from the Conservatoire d'espaces naturels des Hauts-de-France, Écosphère and Aubépine, 24 juvenile Great Horned Owls born in the heart of our region in 2022 and 2023 will be fitted with beacons to gain a better understanding of the challenges facing these Great Horned Owl populations in the Hauts-de-France region.

On April 18, 2023, at the Ferques site, a specific search was carried out using a drone equipped with a thermal camera. The protocol consisted in searching for nesting sites. Two nesting pairs were detected: one nest with 1 young and a second nest with 4 young. The Great Horned Owl is a conservation issue in the Hauts-de-France region. The species is well known on our carrier site at Ferques!

On June 7, 2023, the operation was a success, as a youngster nesting in our Ferques quarry was fitted with a ring-beacon. The youngster is doing well and the equipment is operational. We can already follow him on his first flights!
